Talking ATMs in California

San Francisco, June 23, 2000 -- Wells Fargo Bank and the California Council of the Blind have announced what may be the nation's first effort to install "talking ATM" machines. Wells Fargo will install a talking ATM at each of its more than 1,500 locations in California.

The technology will give voice instruction, via headphones, to users who cannot read information on the ATM screens. The ATMs will have audio jacks to deliver voice information privately to protect the security of users.

The agreement was reached in order to avoid an access lawsuit under the Americans with Disabilities Act.
